I have a remote oil filter on my 7.4 merc 2000 ,   since the filter is mounted upside down do I need a special anti drain back or a racing type filter .  there is a quicksilver filter racing filter that the PO installed ,  not sure if it has a check valve or not/

Just the std Merc filter is fine. You can even use the automotive brands.

The pressure relief valve in the filter helps, and it's just not an easy pass backwards. When you take it off it will be full, pop a hole in the top to let it drain back for less of a mess.

I agree with BD.  For years I had always had a mess taking the filter off without poking a hole in it.  This meant it definitely will hold the oil in the filter due to the pressure relief valve.  (of course I always poke a hole in it now and let it drain before removing)

I can understand the concern about debris, but you'd have to pierce the filter deep for filter pieces to break free and honestly be abusive about punching a hole in it to get metal shavings.  Just my .02.

Unless you wait for an hour or longer, you will have quite a bit of oil sitting in that filter.  I like to take mine off not long after running and while pumping it out (while it's warm is the idea).  I agree with BD, you'd have to really pierce deep in for any issues.  A sharp tool will pierce without pieces.  But hey, do whatever works best for ya!

If you wait till the motor cools down the oil in the filter drains out of it anyway, right??

Yes, and the entire reason for starting it in the first place is to do it while it's warm.  Warm oil pumps much easier and you get all the 'particles' (is that the word I'm looking for?) after running it.  This really isn't a big deal either way.  I've done it both ways, and it certainly isn't going to hurt doing it either way.  It is important though to do it with a warm engine, that is key.
