Whoa.. cool! That one pic is a little scary though... I'm imagining all of that water behind those closed wood doors that don't look like they're sealed too well. -=Mike G.
Mike the doors are made to shut against themselves pushed tight by the water. They are several feet thick and are constantly examined. You could hit them full tilt with an 18 wheeler and the 18 wheeler would crumple like a beer can. The canal system (Rideau Canal) is a U.N. heritage site. The huge limestone blocks were quarried and transported by hand. The blocks were cut so accurately that no mortar was used, they are "dry fit". Thousands died making it. It is 202 kilometers long. It was opened in 1832.....but you're right, even knowing all of that it still feels a bit weird to be way down in that lock with the water above. What's even weirder is approaching a gate and looking over it and down 5 locks and a hundred feet and wondering - what would happen if I "goosed" it by mistake! MT
Very cool pictures. I did the 8 locks on the Allegheny River a few years back. It was a cool experience to run the 69 miles of navigable river. My next venture through multiple locks will be from Pittsburgh to Morgantown on the Monongahela River.

The pictures are in no particular order. It is a nice trip and interesting to see the river go from an urban river to a rural river with camps on its banks.
The second pic is at L&D #2, which is the first lock on the river. The last 2 are at L&D #9. The last one is going upstream and the second to the last one is heading back downstream.

That trip was taken in my old 232cc and my friend was in his 270EC. Now that I have the 280EC, trips like this one are easier to take since there are more creature comforts. Now that I have a little one on the way, she will have a place to nap or watch a DVD.
