Mice on Boat??

Hey Guys,

The guy from the marina that winterized my boat said he saw "mouse droppings" at the helm and on the floor by the engine hatch. He did not go down into the galley and check there. Find this hard to believe. There is a good 500 yards of dock between the slip and shore. I have heard of Rats climbing the mooring lines onto big ships but never heard of mice on a cruiser. Has anybody else had mice and could you suggest how to get rid of them?

Spring loaded traps, bait them with a small piece of chocolate.

I heard that they don't like dryer sheets or moth balls. The moth balls leave an odor in the spring, so I am going to try the dryer sheets.

Make sure they are scented dryer sheets.  Might work for mice, work great for spiders.  If they are living on board they are a disaster for wiring let alone chewing up carpet, etc.  You can get discs (or make your own) that slip over your dock lines, they block them from walking the lines.

The marina called yesterday and said they put out poison. Not my first choice but I'm not down there. I am going to wait until this Polar Vortex breaks and make a trip down to check it out myself. Hopefully the guy who serviced the boat and ID'ed the Mouse Droppings is not a Boy Scout.

I worked for many years with pest control, we always used the instant kill snap traps, but someone has to check them many times a day.

I put bounce dryer sheets in the cabin and moth balls in the cockpit. I also shrink wrap in the winter so it's not a good conditions for mice to live in. never had a problem with mice doing this.
