The compass on my 232 was broken as well. Took the old one out and took it with me to west marine. I was able to find a replacement. The old unit had three screws, the new one had four. Drilled new holes, and dropped it in. I don't remember the model but let me know if you have any questions.
If wrong size means too big, why not make the hole a little bigger to hold it? If it's too small, maybe a collar make of Starboard would work. Just some ideas.
I have 2004 232 and replaced my compass with a Ritchie F-50 Explorer (flush mount) a year ago. Fit hole perfectly but I think I had to drill new holes. Works great.
