Got our 290 in the water today with a new replacement Jasper motor for the cracked mercruiser 5.0 with freeze damage.  Ran like a top(knock on wood), still in the "break in" period but it feels good to be back on the water!  Always appreciate the advice on this forum. Thanks again.

What was the final verdict? Did improper winterize cause the crack and did insurance/mechanic take the cost?

It was improper winterization.  It took small claims court to work things out.
