They do install this in under an hour, but it takes nerve to drill into your hull, if you do it yourself... Seriously.. that part was tough...
These things are fantastic for rigs 18-24' by my reckoning, and where the investment true tabs isn't warranted. I'd love to have true tabs, but it just doesn't make sense on a boat worth <$18k... Maybe if it was used daily... Maybe if it was a working boat of some.sort... But not on a pleasure cruiser.. it's worth the $100~$150 all day long, though...
The whale tail hydrofoil does front to back, not side to side, for what it's worth... the smart tabs, they just create drag on the stern until water tension folds them up, allowing quicker planing and better low speed control... That's about it... But that is a pretty big deal, too.
