Air Intake For Air Conditioner

redlightningredlightning Member Posts: 284 ✭✭✭

still learning about my "new" boat.  I found the ac unit under the front bed.  I noticed a thin grey filter material on one side.  would this be the intake filter?   Does the ac draw air from the bilge area?

Yes!  Hit it with a shop vac once a year and that's all it should need.  That whole area under the forward berth serves as the intake for the AC.  Keep it clean to avoid odor problems.

I'm not sure what you mean by bilge area. The a/c intake is in the mid berth.

it just seems to be using the two cavity's under the front bed and what ever they tie to for air intake to the ac.  there is no hose tied to air intake side with an opening into the cabin.  unless I am missing it. I will take some pics and post.

So there is no grill at the foot of the bed in the mid berth?

The "return" air is in the front of the boat under the 3 draws (at least on my 342). The A/C unit is under the forward bed. MarkB not sure what you mean by mid berth? In the aft cabin under the port side cushion is the A/C pump.

Raybo -- if a boat's bed is located forward of the engine room, technically it's a mid-berth.  An aft cabin is aft of the engine room.

Yes, mid-berth is what you are calling aft cabin. LaRea has it right.

red - what boat do you have?

In my 260EC, there's a grill at the foot of the bed in the mid-berth. 4 swivels get turned and the grill pops off. The A/C unit is located in that cavity, and that grill is the air intake for the A/C.  The air is blown out of a vent beside the steps down to the cabin.

OK however there still is no A/C return in the mid berth. LaRea I agree with you however if you go to a dealer they will tell you its an aft-berth.  Just sayn. My Carver had an aft cabin it was at the stern of the boat. 2 totally separate cabins.

Ray, it depends on the boat. My 260 EC, has the return in the mid-berth, on the wall at the foot of the bed. Did red say what boat he has?

    2008 330

I have not spotted a grill or place that would be an intake.

Wow!  Very interesting.  I believe there is a 330 in my marina, I may have to check it out.  There definitely should be some type of grill to allow the return air to come back.

I went to yachtworld and found this.
    http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2008/Rinker-330-Express-Cruiser-2742099/Sarnia/Canada#.VWW2ptJVhBc

Scroll through the pictures and inside the cabin it clearly shows air discharge and return. Very strange the difference between the 2 boats.......

So you are missing your return and supply?

In the pictures on that link they are both right there, but your pictures do not show either.  Has does it cool the space?

So it looks like there are two vents in the front of the v berth.  I have neither. I have a small supply vent in the head.  A supply vent in the front panel of the sofa toward the back and a small supply vent in front of the storage cabinet in the front v-berth.  I have not found anything that appears to be a return air vent.

it seems that the supply that was in that lower panel on the front berth moved here to the sofa?  this is how my supply is configured.  this is a pic of a boat I found on the net and this same boat has the vent where the step up into the front berth is located.  I wonder if mine is missing?  Would seem odd.  Pretty questionable QC.

It kept us pretty cool last weekend.  I am mostly concerned about it possibly drawing in some air we would not want in the cabin.

This is how my boat is as well. The top left one has a filter in it that your remove from the inside by removing the bin
  • redlightningredlightning Member Posts: 284 ✭✭✭

could you send me a pic of the back side?  I guess I need to find that grill.

I need to understand how the filter and grill work together.

    TIA
