captiva 232 reverse Help!!

I have a 1995 captiva 232 with 7.4 merc with a alpha drive. The problem I'm  having is with switching into reverse and out of reverse which causes the engine to drop its rpm too much and shut off. If i try switching into foward from or to neutral fast it does the same thing slowly works fine. Is there any adjustment i should do? What kind of adjustment? Or do I have to replace a bad part.
Help, weekend is almost here. Docking isnt safe.

the way these things keep from stalling out during the transition is by momentarily killing the engine- it is just a blink before it jumps into gear and all is well.... call it a controlled stall... 

I'm not sure where that happens... it may happen at the engine level (as in the engine compartment), or it may be happening at the control level (your shifter), but something is likely corroded or out of adjustment... 

does the neutral lever work?

Yes, there is a shift interrupter switch on the engine where the shifter cable meets the engine.  As said, it is only momentary, but if not adjusted correctly it will cause a stall & usually at the wrong time.
