i just had that problem. i hope that's all it is for you. i cleaned my strainer and flushed the raw water system, heat exchanger, power steering fluid cooler, and all seems to be good now. here is a link to my thread with some pictures of the clump of mud i pulled out.
Some do, some don't. Look for thru-hull fittings with shutoff valves in the engine room between the engines. If you have them, it means you have dual pickups -- one from the outdrive, and one from the thru-hull fitting and strainer.
If you don't have separate strainers, the culprit could be the water pickup hose from the outdrive. There's a fitting where the hose comes through the transom. The fitting can corrode and restrict water flow.
This happened on one of my 496s, and I had a **** of a time finding the problem. Look here for details:
so far the kit I bought for the brass pump including a wear plate top and bottom with a shorter impeller seems to be working ok......that was 100 bucks. If this does not work I will bite the bullet and get a new Hardin as suggested.
Al, do they have one with the fittings for the manual air pump? I just bought one new pump with those fittings for approx. 700. It does have the replaceable plates. I will probably need to replace the other one soon.
