battery charger and generator

there is a discussion in our boating group that if your anchored out  in a bay  and have the generator  operating you should not be putting on the battery charger as you may fry your batteries  . i thought with our 40 amp battery charger it has a safety cut off  . need your inputs tks

Just as alswagg stated otherwise how else would you charge the batteries while on the hook (without running the motors)?

I will also back the comments.  It is the only way to charge the batteries when on the hook for a few days.  I'll also comment that I've left the generator on (forgetting it) before for a 2 hour trip up on plane.

I run my battery charger off the genny if I'm anchored out.  Just not at the same time that the engines are running.

I always wondered about running the generator while the boat is underway.  I haven't had need but it is good to know.
