UHF radio suggestions - properly hearing incoming calls

I can hear the radio just fine when docked or anchored, but missed some calls last season when underway competing against the engine, wind noise, and tunes.  Is there a good fix for this?  Extender speaker?  Some sort of light that flashes if something is coming in?  How do you handle it?

You are playing battle of the sounds, whoever is loudest wins!

An external speaker can be a good idea, watch the install location so as not to mess up your compass.  I upgraded my marine radio from the stock one and way better sound, the original was just too weak to hear while underway.

I will say I had this problem on my last boat.  I now have an external speaker and that really helps a lot.  As noted, watch placement of it.

You could also just get a handheld as backup and use it.  I have one of those for dinghy use and like it better for regular use as well.
