Generator Charger

I have read a few times on the forum about the generator having a charger (assuming an alternator?) and then obviously there is the battery charger. A little confused here. Does the generator have a separate charger? I always assumed that I fired up the generator and then just turned on the battery charger. Is this not correct? Sounds strange to me but there was a post that said something like "why override the generator charger and rely solely on the battery charger."

Are you sure on this Al?  It seems to call out a battery charging coil and battery charging regulator in the manual and wiring diagram.  There is also a 15 amp battery charging fuse.  On the right hand side of the controller box on my Kohler 5e there is a plug which contains the red, grey and brown wires that appear to be tied to the charging circuit, which I assume to essentially be an alternator.  Are you saying it has it just it was never connected when installed on Rinkers?  See the below pdf.  In the spec sheet the plug I am referring to is next to the voltage regulator.  The last page of the pdf shows it.
