Anyone ever refinish the teak & holly floor?

The last owner of my boat installed a custom plywood set of stairs that were carpeted for their dog. I removed them today & I'm putting the original stairs back. Only problem is, he glued down the plywood pieces, I think with 5200. IF I can get all the 5200 off, I'm guessing that I'll take some of the finish in the process. Has anyone refinished the teak & holly floors? I know it is a thin veneer - I was going to lightly sand with a random orbital sander & then just use a water based poly. Anyone know what type of finish comes on the T & H plywood? Thanks.
