I don't use my VHF much and don't know much about how it works,,,I currently can't get any sound out of it and not sure if I'm missing turning something on or not as it has worked hit and miss- I did find a manual for it, it's just a very basic horizon model. I see I have a button that gives 10 channels for weather channels and then you have the other channels for various emergency/haling channels. I don't if I have an issue with the on/off switch or just something else very basic that I'm missing. It comes on, the channel buttons all work near as I can tell but there just is no sound. I pulled the unit out and it's very well sealed up and not wired to any external speaker...any idea? I see that there should be a way to wire to an external speaker, how hard is it to run to the boat speaker that is right there at the helm, perhaps the internal speaker has just failed?

Seriously Ras ... if it's busted, just replace it. This is critical safety equipment. It's the cheapest life insurance you'll ever buy: $100 new, $40 used on eBay. Better yet, get a new one with a built-in GPS so the Coast Guard can find you faster when your life depends on it. -

I need to replace the speaker, but at the moment I am just using the internal speaker. (Actually, I usually use my portable hand-held unit that I really like)

It means you have a "big red button" to press in an emergency. The radio will tell the USCG exactly where you are (assuming the radio is connected to a GPS, or has its own built-in GPS).
There are other features, like ship-to-ship calling, but the mayday feature is the biggest reason to upgrade. -
