Some play is normal. Approximately how many degrees can the wheel turn before meeting resistance?

My steering was crazy loose at the beginning of last season. Needed a new steering cable.

checked it out yesterday, the helm/leg is controlled by hydraulics.

The free play is between the wheel and the hydraulic system under the dash, there is no or very little play in the arm to the leg clamp.

Anyone know how to access the connection between the wheel and hydraulics.

    thanks

I have this problem on my 290 as well.  Al, before ripping the dash apart, is there any fix in there to get rid of the looseness?  I have 45-60 degrees of movement before it catches.  Not really a problem with power steering, but would like it back to almost zero.

    OK,

    Checked it out again today.

It is a pull/push cable from wheel to stern drive. But also is what looks like a hydraulic assist servo. The cable is connected to this control valve and the valve/cylinder to the arm from the stern drive as I've already mentioned.

The free play appears to be in what looks like a rack (to cable) and pinion coupled to the wheel.

Is there any adjustment between the rack and pinion.

    thanks
