BRAVO 3 SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT

Just replaced the lower shift cable in my 2000, 242 Bravo 3 5.7L TBI. I put the adjustment in the same posistion as the old one, and it seems to shift fine running on the trailer. My question is in the manual, it shows an adjustment tool that sets the distance for the adjuster. It would seem to me that there would some way to measure from a fixed point to the end of the cable and get the same result. Any ideas?

I believe it was made by sierra, so aftermarket.
