really stupid stove question

Hey all I have the alchy stove in a 1995 265.  inside the alcohol stove is a fiber material that you light and that in turn heats the stove so the flames shoot out the rim of the burner.    What is that fiber material called? Is it a wick or is there some fancy name for it

I've always referred to that as the wick for the alcohol.

I think it's the wick. Google the make model and get the operating manual. Should have the part name and number in there.

I had to replace the wick on mine in our previous Rinker.  I contacted the manufacturer and they said they didn't sell the wicks but had a few in stock and mailed some to me.  They should last for quite a long time as long as you don't over flow your sink into the stove and fill the wick with icky water.

What kind of alcohol do you use, and where do you get it? I have only used the electric on my stove.

It's a non smoking alcohol. You can get it at most marine supply stores and camping shops.

The alcohol isn't very powerful. Takes like 1 hour to boil a pot of water. LOL.  If you're on the hook, the electric is WAY better.

If it takes that long to boil water you are using the wrong alchy,   go to the hardware store and get denatured alcohol.    About 10bucks a canbut well worth it.    I usually just use Heat in the yellow bottle.   Cooks my coffee percolator in about 20 minutes.  Nothing like chewable coffee when you're hungover

I did get the denatured alcohol at West marine. OK exaggerated 1 hour but it's a lot quicker with the electrical element.

Does the electric stove work without shore power and genny?

It needs 110V. I think the Genny has enough power to run it.

I wasn't impressed with the alcohol for cooking.  I ended up getting a little single burner butane stove they sell at GFS.  I still use it now and then for quick things like coffee water when on the hook.

Nah, Im playing with a kenyon 406 stove as I type this. This stove can weld things together (thats the truth Ive done it)  Google it and watch some vids of it. Very scary and cool at the same time

Generator runs both burners of a two burner Kenyon stove on a 360....and they're HOT.

You put a wick pad in the center and pour some denatured alcohol into the middle. Light it up and away you go. It's pretty simple.

I use Everclear grain alcohol.  Not only does it burn well but it also can be used for drinks.  It is not the cheapest option but I rarely use the alcohol stove.

I have just been to afraid to have any type of an open fire on the boat. I have a gas grille I use for cooking mounted on the swim platform. Otherwise, I'm if I'm at the marina, I'm usually eating at the marina and if on the hook, I have the genny-

I don't think the stove top is any less safe than the grill on your swim platform. Alcohol has been used for ages in this type of application.

oh I know it......if I have a grease fire on the platform, I can kick the whole thing in the water...in the galley, I'm grabbing an extinguisher.... not sure that is the same level of danger but would not argue it. I won't lite a bug candle below deck....have been in a structure fire before and I just did not have a good time!

Rasbury I get it. But say you aren't in control. Grease fire too big to get near. Or boat rocks violently as people over react spilling grease on fire on the swim platform. There's a lot of possibilities. Next thing the boat is on fire. 

But if you don't need to light a fire in the cockpit, I agree, don't.
