Engine Fuel Filter

Well, slightly embarrassed to say, have had my boat 2 years and I have not replaced my fuel filter. Not for lack of trying. I have a fuel water separator which I have replaced and have a sparte. The fuel filter I'm looking is right at the tank. I have been to West Marine but did not see much there, at least nothing like what I have. I assume, since I have a MPI 350 motor, I assume the filters are rated for something as far as flow. West Marine had some that looked like something for my lawn mower. So, I went to Marine Max as I also wanted the rubber "boot" for my ignition switch (West said they would have to order it) and thought surely they would have both- had no clue what to sell me. Where can I find the appropriate filter and the boot for the ignition switch?

I know one looks like this but my mechanic said there are two and changed out two.

I guess there are many kinds which is why I am having trouble- yes there are two, on a single engine, one fuel water separator and one filter- I can find filters but the are rated for flow and I don't know the flow for mine. Perhaps the owners manual will shed some light....

there are actually two.  One is a large one there shown, and there is another one inside underneath that one and is smaller.

I got the part number for my filter from the Merc Parts finder website. I have the one that is pictured above. I changed it in the spring.

I change my filters every fall after the season is over. The Gen III modules takes two filters. The first one # 35-8M0093688 labeled filter- fuel, the second looks like a small coffee filter # 35-892665 labeled filter-disc. It is also recommended to clean out the Gen III unit that holds them of all moisture before replacing with new ones. They also come with replacement O-ring and gasket for the lid, held on by I think 3
5/16 screws.

I believe those ebay items are correct and at a better price. Amazon also has some marine filters. You may want to check prices there too.

@rasbury. IMO I don't think you have anything to be embarrassed about Ras. I told my marina that I wanted the fuel filters on my 8.2 Mags replaced this year. They said if you REALLY want us to we will BUT Mercury recommends the change interval at 3 years - unless you are commercial or put a LOT of hours on the boat. Mine is two years old and I have about 150 hours on it. I think I'll call the Mercury tech line on that.

thanks for all the info but not sure I have my question answered....I see several places to purchase a filter, but, don't I have to concern myself with how much fuel the filter will process? Like a gallons per minute or something?
