Bravo 3 steering shaft

I am in the process of locating parts for a gimbal ring replacement on my 1999 330FV. WOW! Expensive is an understatement. Has anyone used the stainless steel upper steering shaft instead of the OEM part? $100 for the SS and $350 for the OEM. Don't want to save money and have a premature failure though. Any thoughts or insights into where may be good places to find good deals on parts or on the repair itself would be very much appreciated.
