Steering play left and right

I had a post here last year and did some leg maintenance to see if play was in leg - none was found.  I have now seen in the manual that there is a Steering helm check valve plug(s) that could be dirty, causing left and right steer while at slow speed. Has anyone ever taken these out and cleaned them before?  I believe it is a seastar hydraulic system on the Rinker 230 AC.
