what was that book....

When I first joined the forum a couple of years ago, Tiki and others kept telling me most of the questions I was asking about boat operation would be covered in some big ol book that everyone seemed to know about......never purchased and now can't remember what it was......know what I'm talking about???

I will post tomorrow the name of a little handbook I get from West Marine that is super helpful. The title slips my mind at the moment. Drat! -

Ok so I made a mission out of getting the book info. Lowered the boat, obtained the book, raised the boat and here I am.The book is titled "Boater's Pocket Reference" written by Thomas McEwen. It is 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 and has 765 pages. I recommend keeping a copy of this one on the boat.TonySalt Shaker 342 -

Yes Ras, red to right returning from the sea....but as you say how's that interpreted by local jurisdictions. If you are using a GPS it should clearly indicate the color of the marker buoys and what side to pass them on. -

Here is an idea that I use. We keep an extra copy or two aboard the Salt Shaker. Sometimes we would like to give a gift to a boater we have met and formed a friendship with. This makes a perfect memento to give in honor of the occasion. -

And it will fit in your pocket. And yes, I do have Chapman's. I like the small handbook better. And they are available at West Marine even though they do not seem to appear on their website. -

McEwen's intro says he wrote his book to be like Chapman's, but smaller. I'll have to check it out!
When I bought my first boat, I read Chapman's from cover to cover. It took a while, but the investment has paid for itself many times over.
When you have a specific boating question, you can usually find answers on the web. The beauty of reading a book like Chapman's is that you get info you didn't know you needed.
Because, when there's something you don't know, sometimes you don't even know that you don't know. Ya know?
