What went wrong with my oil change?

I changed my oil for the first time using for lack of better description , the oil drain tube vs. sucking it through the dip stick tube method, with me? Went pretty well, I suppose. This is only my 2nd oil change. I did not recall that when I pulled the oil filter off having such a mess last time. I did have a plastic bag and tossed it in but it was a little mess to clean. I used the draw tube for a few although I don't know I had a good connection to it as it looks like it should have a fancy connection to a fancy pump- mine is a harbor freight on a drill. The tube on it jammed in there and seemed to work. I switched to the tube on the dip stick to see if it would work better, the other way did so went back to it. I ran the motor to heat it up but let it set for some time. It's hot in FL so I wanted it to cool off a bit in the engine compartment. That was a jab by the way. Pulled that filter off and look like I stuck a pig, thought it would drain down better? Should you knock a hole in it to relieve pressure and then let it drain down a bit?

I used to poke a hole in the filters ( many years ago) until a renowned engine builder told me not to. It was his opinion that filter media and, /or metal filings could be dislodged from the damage to the filter and/or the action of creating the hole, then washed into the engine by the escaping oil. This man built some if the most respected high performance engine packages in North America for decades. He lived and breathed engines. His advice has saved me a ton of money over the years. This past Fall I saw a technician drive a screw driver through an oil filter - it made me cringe. Not on my engines!
