Rail Size for Flag Mount?

Hi All,

Just joined a yacht club and one of the requirements is that we fly our burgee flag off the front of our boat.  I have an 07' 280 Express Cruiser and I'm wondering if anyone knows off the top of their head what the diameter is of the rail size.  I went down and snagged the only rail mount size West Marine had at 1" but our rails are bigger than that.  My rough measurements came back at 1 1/2" but none of the major sellers make anything bigger than 1 1/4" so I'm wondering if my math is off...

I have some special fender holders that mount in two places to my rail. I think it may be 1.5 inches too. I bought composite  clamps ( I chose composite over metal as I didn't want to scratch the railing) which I rigged to fit. I think Sea Dog made them. I'll go to my condo storage and see if I can find a PN. then I'll take a picture and post. It was frustrating for me but I found a way. Give me a little time to look, pls.

OD - that's where any clamp or pole will have to fit, right?

I had to wrap some electrical tape around my rail to have my clamp fit snug.

Hi All, thanks for the feedback.  I went ahead and ordered the Taylor Made flag mount as well.  The 1" mount was just slightly too small, so I'm pretty sure the 1" 1/4 will work and that option is pretty cheap compared to others.  Thanks again!

The 1 1/4 should work fine. If it's a bit small you can use longer SS nuts and bolts.Good luck!

The bolts on the one I mentioned above are rather long. They should work on a larger rail.

Another idea, one that worked for me.  I wanted to be able to bow mount a ham radio antenna in such a way that it would be removable for cruising.  One D ring attached with two "screw type aircraft clamps" at the correct point on the rail and another D ring attached similarly at the correct point on one of the bow rail supports.  Positioned such that when I put the mast for the antenna thru them, the antenna is secure and out of the way and no problems.  You might want to try something similar for the burgee mount.

 

Funny story is that when I am at the dock, with the antenna in place, passers by often ask me what this contraption is.  It has an upper horizontal member and a lower horizontal member.  So I usually reply "it is a cloths pole.  bras in the top and panties on the bottom"  before explaining what it really is.

 

Incidentally, I have it set up to be able to support the burgee from our yacht club as well.

Hi All, the Taylor Made mount did the trick.  Fit perfectly on the rail with plenty of room to spare.  Burgee itself is a bit big, but I blame that on the yacht club and their much bigger boats.
