Snap In Carpet?

redlightningredlightning Member Posts: 284 ✭✭✭
I want to get new carpet ordered for the cockpit.  I have researched this topic on the forum and there are 3 different companies mentioned.  Any feedback after a couple of seasons of use?  All seem to be similarly priced so wanting the best product.  Thanks in advance.

I used snap-in-carpet. Get the carpet with the grey backing, not the black waffle looking stuff. I'm on 6+ years, like new still.

www.snapincarpet.com did my carpet.  Nice job.  They even did a few custom changes for me.  Grey backing for sure, not the black.  They do not seem to have the template already for yours, so you will have to go the mylar way I believe.  good luck.

Did you all install the snaps yourself?
I think I like the teak 2 product.  Any thoughts?

I used Corinthian marine carpet for my replacement carpets. They turned out nice. I installed the snaps myself.

I borrowed a tool from my marina's owner.  She said it would make a world of difference...it did.

Going to the boat next weekend while it's still in dry storage to make a template using the one I purchased from Snap in Capets...taking the Admiral with me as she's generally better at that kind of thing than I am. Excited to get new cockpit carpet for the season.

Feel free to pass on any suggestions!

Not bad!  Interesting how you guys said don't do the black honeycomb backing.  Mine is making a freaking mess of things and crumbling.  Love to see any photos of new carpet installs.

I have the OEM carpeting in mine that the backing is black. It is a MESS. The backing sticks to the fiberglass. But its nice to know that wont I get it out of storage I can throw all that away! Seadek baby!

I use my leaf blower to get rid of it....I'm just waiting for it all to fall off and then not worry about it. My carpet is not in to bad of shape other than the backing...It fits the look of the rest of the boat anyway....one day!

Same here Handy. I noticed at this winters boat show that Rinker no longer does carpeting. They do a snap in but its more along the lines of a canvas maybe?

My carpet backing is peeling as well and it drives me nuts with the mess.  I was going to replace it this year, but I'm going to wait another season as the carpet isn't in that bad of shape.  I'm going to either use Plasti-dip or durabak to top coat the backing.  I have also heard you can use a product from GAF which is used on roofs to brush on and it works like plastidip.  Most from what I have read this treatment gives you another few seasons of life.

The black stuff was coming off of my carpets a few years ago.  I used the rug backing material linked below to extend my carpets for three seasons.  Worked great.

I was thinking of using plastidip myself as I use it for work, great stuff.  Was worried about it sticking to the deck and causing more of a mess.

@rmrstlmo that looks promising.  Did you get all the old backing off or just cover up?

Found it on Amazon prime for same price.

A friend used spray on varnish about 3 years ago, no mess, no sticking. The Admiral in the slip next to us sprayed carpet sizing (the plastic based one) onto the backs of her carpets worker great, that was 2 years ago.

06Rink270 - I just brushed off the loose black stuff first.  Then applied the carpet backing product with a paint brush.
