Guys, do you think I need to leave them on all the time when boat is on the lift? Thinking of using the acc switch to shut them off.

IMO they do not need to be left on while on a lift. To do so would IMO be to think that your lift could conduct electricity from the surrounding water to your hull and its fittings. You should be fine. There should be no ground for your boat other than through your shore power cords

are these just nessary for salt water? Cannot recall ever having one on any boats.

The Mercathode will not pull any power when out of the water. I'd just leave it alone.

Cathodes are required in any water to prevent erosion of the boat's in-water metal fittings. In salt water any stray electrical currents travel farther but are less concentrated. In fresh water the electrical currents don't travel as far but are more concentrated. You need a cathode system no matter what.
