installing snaps

So, boating really gets you do doing little, and big things, you have never done before. I was able to buy a used mooring cover for a 270, it was an 03 model and I have an 05. I did not think it would be an exact fit, however, surprised how much different the size was. At any rate, I just use the cover for storage and the price was worth the material cost so not a problem there. I need to add a few snaps to the cover here and there to make it work a little better and will be happy with it....I started looking at tools, I understand I don't need one to do 20 covers a day and a DYI tool will be fine- most of which look pretty straight forward but does one of these crimper type tools do all sizes of snaps or does it matter? Have never held one in my hand....home depot has a little set for 5 bucks and assume you set with a hammer vs. a plier looking tool......I'm sure someone has been down this road....

Optionschamberb Member Posts: 265 ✭✭✭I just bought a cockpit cover for my 260. After reading reviews I bit the bullet and bought the $140 tool. I can't compare to how the less expensive tools would work, but this made the job so easy. No pre drilling holes in canvas. Each snap takes about 15 seconds to put on. I was glad I got the good one. This one does all manner of snaps. I got the Pres n snap. Again, this was my first time putting snaps on so I can't say how well the cheaper tools work if you only have a few snaps to do.

It is the same tool that @chamberb mentioned above and it works great. It puts snaps in carpet along with covers. Granted, if you are only putting in a small handful of snaps once, I would consider the $20 tool.

OptionsDream_Inn Member, Moderator Posts: 7,561 modRas, I've bought the kit that comes with the snaps and the pliers tool. I've also bought the one with the hammer tool. They should work sufficient for your needs. I've used them many of times over the years. I think I like the hammer one the best, but you have to be careful not to "smash" it too much. Also need to make sure it is centered in there just right so it flattens all the way around evenly. You'll see what I mean when you begin. I've really only seen one size out there, so you should be ok with that.

Optionsrasbury Member Posts: 8,242 ✭✭✭✭✭Thanks Dream, I think I like the idea of the hammer type at least over the cheaper plier type for the reasons stated. I will be installing probably about 20 or so snaps so it is more than just a couple but I have plenty of time and want it right!

The one I bought actually came with 2 different size plates things(not sure what they are called) you can interchange so it can do a number off different sizes.
