AIS?

Does anyone here run AIS?  How useful is it, really?  I am considering going whole hog on the electronics update, (after I get port engine fixed!!) and I am curious.  I know it is very popular for offshore fishing, etc.  But I don't spend much time far out to sea, once or twice a year we go fishing out past the 100 fathom curve, about 25-30nm each way.

I have friends with AIS and they say it is best for fogged-in areas with heavy traffic. One has AIS and Thermal Imaging. He says the Thermal Imaging is just amazing. It was a bit pricey for me though. I didn't do a lot of night cruising. By nightfall we were usually at anchor or the dock.

    MT,

That thermal imaging is awesome!  I don't operate a whole bunch after dark, but sometimes we do.  It is very pricey for a good one.  Whenever I do operate after dark it tends to be when there is a bunch of traffic...4th of July for example.

@NavyCTRC, yeah I can see where you'd need that gear!
