Kohler 5e died today. Anti diesel?

Liberty44140Liberty44140 Member Posts: 4,380 ✭✭✭✭✭
as noted in another post I just changed plugs, oil, filter and fuel filter, usual maintenance. Also took BDs advice and removed inline Kohler fuel filter that attaches to the fuel pump and put in the barb he recommended. I have a good oinline filter/separator by the valve that is new. Anyway ran great today while we were on a mooring ball and then died. Sounded like it lost fuel. I've heard choke hunting before, this was kinda like that but more revving and then stall over the course of 10 seconds. Shot water out fast a couple times right before stall. Won't turn back over, just chugs, sounds like no fuel as it doesn't even kinda start for a second. So, I am thinking since its 10 years old and only has 224 hours I need to do some fuel system cleaning that I've read about. Where should I start? Clean anti diesel and carb? Thanks

Well, the anti-diesel valve you can clean, assuming it works of course. Among all my issues, at one time I took
a 1-gal gas can with no-ethanol gas, added about 1/2 can of seafoam and ran a fuel line from the can to the fuel pump and let it run.

Oh yes. Check the pigtail connection at the fuel pump too. Mine was bad.

Thanks. Best to just replace the anti diesel rather than clean? I've done the separate tank sea foam deal on my outboards so that's no problem. We only have no ethanol gas here. Anything else I should check or do?

May as well see if you can clean it first, just use carb cleaner. The pin should move freely. Clean the port it goes into also. My electrical connection was bad on my fuel pump too. I hard spliced that fella, problem gone.

Just pulled ADS. Looks clean, here is a pic. The needle pops up and down freely when I push up and down on it, spring loaded. Almost no fuel dripped out of the bowl. Pretty much none. So I am thinking problem is before this solenoid. I'm going to go get some carb cleaner and clean it up while its out. Glad I'm down 15 lb right now, getting there was not easy. Next step is to hardwire the fuel pump power as BD recommended. How do I test fuel pump to see if it even works? Could be bad fuel pump?

Cleaned ads with choke cleaner and sprayed cleaner in to the bowl, then put clean ads back in. Also hard wired the fuel pump (lines were too short so I had to do 2 connections and add some 16g in between). Still won't turn over. I bought a remote tank and some sea foam but before I do that we're going to go put some fuel in to the main tanks. Was at 1/3 when the gen died but who knows maybe that's where the line stops. First season with boat.

No dice on low fuel, filled the tank up to 3/4 and she still won't start. Thinking fuel pump, thoughts?

Just run the pump with the output open and see if it moves fuel.

@Black_Diamond, how likely is it that the pump went bad after 10 yrs? As I mentioned when I took the ant diesel out there was really no fuel in the bowl. Does that mean that my problem is before the anti diesel and the carb? Is it safe to assume the issue is at the pump or before the pump? Thx

@Black_Diamond, I gave partsfortechs a call as you have advised on other posts. Very helpful. Sounds like even though the bowl had no fuel in it, my issue could be:
A - dirty carb (he said that is unlikely as a dirty carb should still let some fuel in to the bowl)
B - bad Anti Diesel solenoid (I am thinking that is unlikely since it sputtered like it was starving for fuel for several seconds when it died).
C - bad fuel pump (they said this is most likely the issue but to test it first like you said)
Do you concur? Since the boat is an hour away I am considering just buying a new fuel pump as it sounds like that is most likely the issue but wanted to run this by you.

For the time/money I would just replace the pump and the ADV too. I'd do it. I've done it. lol

Thanks @Black_Diamond, just ordered both the ads and fuel pump. Also will do the sea foam treatment once I get it running. Fingers crossed. Will report back next weekend.

Morning! Well new fuel pump did it. The old one was totally shot, pumped nothing. I also replaced the anti dieseling solenoid since I had it, figured might as well rather than return. At first it would not start but after I primed fuel through the pump and then connected the hard line to the pump it fired right up! Ran for a half hour under load. While I was there I did the impeller. Was pumping a lot of water but I figured why not. Good thing, two vanes were missing, I was bummed but I found both missing vanes in the pump housing output. All good! Thanks @Black_Diamond
