Quick Horn Question

My horn quit working.  It was never really loud IMO.  The last couple of times that I used it the sound was really wimpy.

I'm getting 12v at the horn when the button is pushed.

I check the resistance and it does not show a straight circuit across the horn receptacles.  Should it?

Bad horn 
if you have power at horn but no sound.

Take apart the back of the horn and clean the contact with a small piece of sandpaper.

^^Agree.  The contacts look like a set of points......if you know what points are

I've always had in the back of my mind to upgrade the horn anyway so now I have a good excuse.  Thanks for the help.

If you upgrade the horn, go with the all stainless version. Well worth the extra few bucks.

On my single trumpet electric horn, we had a driving rainstorm that put gallons of water into it.  That was the end of that one.  Replaced it with a new one.  Better yet, Salt Shaker now has, in addition a pair of really nice air horns on the arch.  These get everyones attention.  You bet!

Just, finally, placed an order for air horns for my 342. Planning on putting them on the arch and use the existing hole from the old TV antenna cable as the thru hole for the airline.  Still a bit TBD on the compressor location, probably put the tank behind the ice maker I am thinking.  Putting in a Kahlenberg K-380 dual horn.  Finally a horn someone can hear!

Great idea. Is the compressor 120 volt?

12VDC. Small too. I might even mount the tank/compressor under the port seating. Not like the compressor runs often to worry about. Plus a shorter airline run. Wiring should be a snap and use the existing horn switch.

I believe the compressor for mine is under the removable switch panel on the horizontal  surface of the helm station.  It is really tiny.

I looked at SS. The guy said the white was less upkeep. Plus everything else is white up there. $100 cheaper too in white. lol

Made of brass and bronze. No rusting. Just more effort to polish the chrome is my bet.

Just make sure there's no way for rain water to drip into the compressor through the air hose.  Mount the compressor with the hose exiting at the bottom.  Otherwise, the compressor will corrode and die within 1-2 years.  

Oh - and don't use cheap hose.  You need the hose to be as short as possible, and as stiff as possible.

This system has an air tank, so the compressor is isolated from water flowing backwards. I even asked about that!  

Compressor, tank, fittings, airlines, solenoid valve and horns were about $600

Glad I saw this post. I have a single electric trumpet that the previous owner replaced in the last few years. No sound at all. So last night I opener her up and sprayed lube in there, drenched it and the drained. Put her all back together and my neighbors were annoyed for a good 20 min as I celebrated saving $100 by sounding my horn which sounds like new. Thanks!

Received my new horn yesterday.  Haven't installed it yet but tested it using my car battery.  Sounds great compared to the original horn.
