Is there a way to pull a shift cable out of a different boat with the same engine and outdrive and use that for now? Of so how does one do that?

You certainly can. Not sure what you have for an engine/outdrive but I know on a Volvo, it's a real easy thing to do. It can even be done in the water ......under the right circumstances.
