Oil in the bilge - port 496 engine

I have a bit of water in my bilge, which is fine and i know i have to do my second swivel shaft and seal fix and just haven't gotten to it yet.  But what's more concerning is i now have some oil in that water.  It appears to be engine oil.  It started late last season and it was very minimal.  Now its certainly increased but still relatively speaking my port 496 engine might need a half quart of oil after 30 hours of run time.  None the less i need to fix it, most likely in the off season.  The problem is i cannot locate the darn leak.  I have watched while at idle and i see no drips nor really a distinct trail.  Maybe it only leaks under heavy load?  I'm thinking i'll pump the bilge and put some absorbant clothes down there and see if i can't locate where its leaking from.  Anyone else deal with a slow engine oil leak, and what was it?  My guess is the gasket on the oil pan.  Operating in salt on a 11 year old boat, i hear these things go first.
