If its just one ding, I agree with black diamond, use a carpet runner. My wood floor had several dings & gouges from the previous owner. I just recently sanded the entire floor & refinished it. A lot of work for only one ding & you only get one chance to refinish since the floor is plywood & the wood you see is only a thin veneer. When I sanded, I had to be very careful to not go through to the lower layers.

I was thinking the Sam thing. Cover it with carpet. There's no easy way to fix a ding. Patching the area will be very noticeable. You need to send down everything and re-stain. That would be way too much work for one ding.
