handy is talking about staying on plane.when coming up on plane your right its about 18-20mph thats when you throttle back and bring taps up.but when running and you back down, how much can you back down before she drops out?
MD have you had the admiral on a 342?The space is a Huge difference. You can actually close the door to go pottie.while she's in the shower.
I have not been on a 342 (and neither has the admiral) but we have been on cruisers of similar size. The separate shower is a priority feature on our next boat.
Dan - It may be 3200 or 3300 but its definitely below 3500, if I am doing this I am in rough seas and paying attention to speed, plane and the admirals demeanor, not exact rpm. Again Tabs are down which as said here makes a huge difference. You must have a super duper 342 though. To go 27 I would need to be around 3700 RPM. You could take 5-10 mph off your speed easily with the tabs down past half. Like most freshwater 342's with 350's on this site, I cruise at 28 - 30mph at 3800 - 4000 RPM on the tach's.
Handy - I said "down" but not fully down. Usually 1/2 to 2/3. This is going in to 4 foot lake erie chop waves which are nothing like the nice rollers that most of you have. If I go too far down on the tabs the bow will dig too much.
My boat is an 06 and I believe somewhere in the 2003 arena the transom was moved back to make for better and slower plane speeds. I do not need any tab to get on plane and I do top out at 40 mph like the other freshwater 342's here.
I've never tried it with tabs all the way or almost fully down. Too late now as it's out of the water, will have to try it next year. I normally cruise around 3500 - 3600 RPM's, that gets me at 26 to 28 MPH. I mispoke earlier....3400RPM's I'm around 25MPH. Top end on my boat is 42 - 44 MPH.
No longer a boat owner.....previous boat - 2005 Rinker Fiesta Vee 342
