Bottom paint

bottom was painted before I took possession of the boat but paint is all the way to the drives and trim tabs. I am thinking about removing paint around drives and tabs. Inch or so. I heard it's done to prevent corrosion correct? 
I see mix boats at the marina 
some
have the gap some don't.
all my boats always had gap between paint and drives

    I will buy a drill ADaptor and send bottom paint away from the transom assembly. Then lay in some tape in spring to paint
