Seawater Pump

Hey guys, I have noticed rust water underneath the pulley of the seawater pump. I understand the bearings are shot. Do I replace just the pulley or does the seawater pump have to be replaced also?

I seem not to be able to find the pulley attached to the pump. I have air fittings but Im thinking I only have to replace the front part. Am I correct or not?

Yes just the front,need tool to pull pulley,and press back on.

Oh yeah. Hardest part is just getting the old one out with the usual contortions required. lol.

If you like using "the right tool for the job" ... get a set of indexing ratchet wrenches like this:

It will cut the job time in half compared to a straight combo wrench.

remove bolts form bracket pull pump a little forward then losing hoses.they are right under the motor mount

Speaking of belt life...i have replaced my pump but do not have any if the fancy tools to get that belt tension to spec- same for cars for that matter...how critical is that tension and do the pro's really use those gauges? I understand to tight is a belt killer and to lose slippage...

Then I will invest- would hate to call sea tow for such a simple problem...I blew mine out when a water pump seized and I actually put an auto one on there on the water but did not realize the pump had seized until I put the belt on- it has held up but probably should get the merc one and put on it or at least have it on the boat. Thanks Al.

Ras, a spare belt is also a good thing to have.  But I agree, tension gauge is a good thing.  Mine has a spring type tensioner that is supposed to automatically keep the correct tension on it.

now that I think about it, mine does too.....? 350 MPI horizon....it was a while ago...
