One more question. Help with AC strainer

This is what the AC intake looks like on the bottom of my hull. The inside strainer and all mechanical components of the AC look good. Is this ok to leave as is?  Is it a difficult job to replace other than scraping it to get to the screws?

How are your other thru hulls? I would think there is chance that as it deteriorates further around that lip that it can start leaking into the boat- I would think this would be a replace before it goes back in the water and look at the rest of them as well- I'm not 100% or even 99 but to me, that looks like a bad problem waiting to happen- I might be way off base on this and I'm sure someone that knows more will chime in...

This is the only through hull I see other than the transom plug. The transducer is through hull and the sink and shower drains are above the water line and in great shape.

Handyman I think you are right.  Not sure how tough of a job it is. Is it just 4 screws?

I think you have to unscrew from inside the hull.the srcews just hold it there.you should have  another one for your popper.(Tru hull)

Take off hose,take off seacock,then a big nut.5200 then reverse.

If that screen is all I need then it should be a pretty straightforward repair.  I thought the strainer had more to it.

Personally, I'd replace the thru hull/valve the way that looks.

yep, while you have it off I'd replace it....it is probably pretty eaten up too. Is there a bigger issue going on with grounding on this, should it corrode like this?

Is the strainer corroded, or is that mechanical damage (struck submerged object)?  

If it's just a broken strainer, replace it.  If it's corrosion, you'd be smart to check all of your thru-hulls for mechanical integrity and proper bonding wires.

It looks like the brass screen was painted with bottom paint that could be the root cause for the deteroration. I would for sure check the integrity of the Tru hull valves. If you replace the Tru hull make sure to use a seacock that doesn't have a screw in valve, these type fail faster see video below for more info

The 270 does not have boning wires or my 2002 did not,my 05 342 does.the corrosion would be normal for ten year old boat,in new England salt water.just my opinion.maybe bottom paint and brass bad mix?

I can not say for certain that brass and bottom paint is a bad combination, they are both metals that are close on the scale of Nobility but the paint is not completely reacted copper so it will corrode.

My head has a fresh water tank rather than through hull for raw (salt) water. The previous owner retrofitted it with a simple 5 gallon tank in the space next to the cockpit trash can.  Nice addition that should keep the smell down. So no worries with that strainer.
