Re-covering steps - looking for advice

I removed the carpet on the floor of our cabin, but haven't done anything with the steps.  I would like to remove the carpet from them and replace with SeaDek or something similar.  I looked at pre-made wood steps with treads but they are upside down for my application.  Has anybody taken the carpet off of their carpeted floating steps?  If so, was the surface under it worth saving?

The surface is doubled up 3/4" plywood.

Sounds like it would be worth sanding and sticking something else on it.

Have you theought about having plastic teak steps made? Or buying the plastic and rout it yourself?

Plas teak in Akron, Ohio will make them for you with dimensions. My dad has sent them every exterior piece of teak his sailboat has and they re made it in plas teak and it looks great. Was surprisingly inexpensive too, a 3" x 5" step with texture and pre drilled holes was around $10 per step

Thanks Bistro. That's them! It's just a half hour south of Cleveland so if your coming this way it would be easy to pick up. The entire sailboat was $1000 which sounds like a lot but if you picture all of the wood on an 80s sailboat deck I would think steps would be maybe $30ish each? Just guessing. That includes the entire companion way door going down in to the cabin and all pieces trimming out the door to go down.
