volt gage is reading 16-17 volts wheres the voltage regulator?

Before I burn up my batteries I want to replace the voltage regulator. I have no idea where it is. The alternator appears to have something that closely resembles a regulator on the back side.  If that's what it is, is it replaceable or am I looking at a new alternator?

Depending how old is your altermator most modern alternator do not have an external regulator its incorporated in the alternator.

The alternator is original to the boat its a 1994 SV265.  I bet that black box on the rear is the regulator...besides the red and black leads, there also 2 smaller leads on the back of that box.

Before I did anything, I would check the voltage coming off the alternator with a multi-meter. I would not trust a dash mounted gauge alone.

A good place to look at the buss voltage would be one of the cigar lighters.
