    Hello Taz
I would bet that most pleasure boaters drop anchor in a nice little bay for lunch or a swim and you get in as close as is safe and it probably isn't any deeper than 10 metres, if that's what you got then it's usually enough, in an emergency such as engine failure in deeper water always keep a good length of rope on board you could extend the anchor rope if necessary, too much chain will slow you down and cost more fuel, however if you intend sleeping on your boat at anchor you can never have too much chain, my opinion.

I have 130 feet of chain and I plan to add some rope as well and a new windlass at some point.
