Raw water strainer installed wrong

Fired up motors today,trouble getting port motor to prime(impeller changed last year).cleaned out strainer and the yuk was under the basket? The thru hull and the outdrive Y together and enter the strainer in the lower hole and the pump exits above the basket.I assume this is a factory install.Did not take pic's as this just sunk in after looking on the web.
notice the arrow,I think mine is backwards?
Is this the same unit you guys have?

I'll climb back in tomorrow and check again.

Mine have given me trouble priming in the past as well. A quick bump into gear and some throttle has always gotten the water flowing. Note I do not have a thru hull pickup. Just the drives on the 496s/360fv.

I have the same setup but not sure on direction, I can look at it next weekend

I have a thru hull pickup and will also check but can't imagine which way it flows through would matter...

@rasbury Flow probably doesn't matter when in water,but trying to run on muffs it sucks the air from the top.and stuff gets under the screen  (basket).
