270FV Refrigerator ruined

So I made the mistake of trying to remove some of the ice from the freezer compartment of my fridge with a screwdriver today, when I heard the hissing sound of freon escaping. ugh!  Didn't realize her was gas running through the bottom of the compartment.  Anyone know where I can get a new refrigerator at a decent price?

I always let it defrost before trying to remove the ice
never use anything that can cut or create a hole
i do it twice a season
july and during lay up

Measure old unit
if unit is still in production then search eBay 
craigs or good ol
web
if not then just find something similar in size
make sure it's the 12v to 110 version

Also check out RV shops and websites. Usually less $$$. Anything that says "marine" usually costs more $$.

Can't get over the prices of the marine fridges, don't see anything under $500 that would fit.  I see on Tundra website that they still make an 18x21 size,  not sure of price.

Hate to say it, but for dual voltage $500 isn't bad.

That frig won't be cheap. Just how it is for those types. Always some hope of finding a used one and take the gamble.

I just picked up a dometic 1065 for $600 its 2.3 cu ft, I've seen the 1050 for 500 but it's a little smaller

I just upgraded to a Vitrifrigo fridge only unit.  They had one that was plug-and-play (mostly).  So far, so good.

Replace the evaporator and have a tech vac and charge it.

Was thinking about repairing it, but probably cost half the price of a new one to do it and anyway and not sure the parts would be available.

I like the removable freezer feature of the Dometic.  Think I'll go for this one.

That is the miniature ketchup bottle/pouch and butter stick storage area. It also serves as a shot glass chiller.

Question: Why is it necessary to have a dual voltage fridge... why not just a 12v? When you're plugged into shore power the onboard charger is going to charge the batteries and the fridge will stay on....

@diggin2day1 your right the fig is a 12v with a inverter for the 110v.I guess the benefit would be no draw to the bat?

The previous owner of my FV270 replaced the fridge with a 12v only model. When my boat is in my slip and plugged into shore power, the batteries stay charged from onboard charger. While under way, batteries charged via alternator. I have spent a week at anchor with 4yr old group 24 batteries. Not sure how much cheaper a 12v only fridge is, but it's an option.

Well here's the funny part, if there is NO DOCUMENTATION at all that the fridge is on the same circuit as the stovetop.. I bet you a TON of people (like me) have never even run their fridge on AC..  I would have NEVER known that I'd have to turn the breaker marked "stove" on to get the fridge to run on AC.. it makes no sense to me.

My guess would be if the battery that feeds the fridge goes bad it might be too much of a load on the charger. Remember some people dont go to their boats for weeks.

What year is your boat? On my 280, I have a separate breakers for the stove and fridge.
