sea strainers

I was told to do away with the outdrive intake and put in sea strainers with large filters.  Then just today , another guy said NO WAY..........you eliminate cooing of drives . What is the right answer ?

    Think about it for a minute. If it was better to eliminate outdrive intake then Merc would have eliminated it. You can add a thru hull but you cant eliminate drive cooling.......

    right - I have both, thru hull and drive in take come to a Y fitting that then goes to a strainer and in to the water pump. As Ray said add the thru hull if you want but don't eliminate the drive intake.
