First, thanks everyone for all the advice.  We tried the electrical suggestions, no go. Took the table base out, cut the sound proofing inserted  my disabled stick to hit the actuator motor several times whilst I operated the switch. Finally the brushes became unstuck and Bingo the hatch raised.  Used the net to find a replacement I was surprised how expensive 499.95 dollars. That was a complete unit. Wife is not impressed. However I found a UK unit for £68, wife mollified. My son believes probably it may last for years if carefully watched.  Hope this helps any member with a similar problems in the future. Who ever thought boating was expensive.

Thanks for posting the follow-up.  Great price.  Did you replace only the motor, not the entire actuator?

Big question: is it certified for use in the engine room?  i.e.: ignition protected?

As yet Ive made no purchase I need to know if the product is suitable, it certainly appears to be good enough but I'm going to be careful. The price is very attractive!!!!!!

The product is Grimsonrobotics on the uk net there is a choice of sizes have a look it's worth a shot

I looked through their specs, and didn't see anything about being ignition-protected.  Before you buy, call them and ask.  If it's not ignition-protected, don't put it in your engine room.
