Engine will not start unless i wiggle the throttle handle

My engine will not start unless i wiggle the throttle handle.  This happened a few years ago and I don't remember what it was or how it was fixed.  I want to say it was the neutral safety switch but not for sure nor do I remember where it's located to fix it.  Any help would be appreciated.  I have a '88 FV 250 mercruiser.

Safety switch sounds right. Take the cover off, maybe its loose.

If that model has safety switch with lanyard, they sometime's are a nuisance. In any boat brand, or check neutral safety switch.

could be a starter slave solenoid and its just a coincidence that it starts after you move the handle a little

Happens occasionally on mine, turn key and nothing that always presents that momentary "WTF" thought, then a wiggle and she fires up. But it raises a question - manual says not used or bypassed for B3 drives. Is there some other mechanism than the neutral switch in play here?

Sounds like a neutral safety switch.  Boat will not start in gear, if switch is misadjusted it could cause this.

Resuscitating this thread as I am getting this more often now. Looking in the manual for the controls - Commander 3000 dual - there is the neutral switch buried within the unit. Anyone pulled one of these apart to check/adjust? Not looking like a simple task.

Judging by the year and model boat, I'm betting you have an alpha drive?  I know on my old boat with an alpha, I had a shift cut-off switch that would momentarily cut power while shifting out of gear into neutral - yes, as mentioned, neutral safety switch.  It was located on the engine at the end of the shift cables (one from shifter and one going to outdrive, connected on motor).  I'm betting that needs adjustment. :)

ok, sorry, it's an old thread, not sure it helps icoultha.

No, B3's. The old Bayliner was as you described. According to the manual it appears these are in the controller, both stern drive and engine manuals indicate so and the controller manual confirms it.

No other thoughts on exploring the controller unit?
