VHF Antenna Replacement

I am replacing my antenna (fort the 2nd time). The original Shakespeare is roughly 7' long. Question---- can I replace with a shorter unit? Maybe 4'? I assume that the length dictates the range of reception? Ours is mounted atop the arch.

VHF radio's work line of sight. Yes your range will be cut down but its hard to figure how much.

If you're an inshore boater then a shorter antenna should be more than enough. Most hand held backup vhf radios (you do have one handy right?) have a range of 5 or 6mi in high range with thier little whip or internal antenna.

Off shore or longer range needs will dictate a longer main antenna. Hope that helps. Have a great season. Mike

Thanks for the response. Maybe the 4'er will be the last one!
