Can anyone tell me where it is and how to access the air conditioner. Can Freon be added, or is there room to check the compressor?
Thanks for any and/or all answers

Can you expand on this or am I lost in a land far, far away?

I would recommend that you replace the old AC unit. You probably have an old R22 system and the freon cost more than a new unit. I would guess that you have a 12000 BTU unit. Once you locate it you can confirm this.

i have a 98.  if the 97 is the same, to access go to rear berth and remove the plywood wall on the stbd side.  (should be pretty easy, a handful of screws)  from there, look towards the bow - it should be accessible (barely) next to the hull, very close to where the discharge comes out in the hull.

probably easier to just replace as mentioned, it was a hassle to get at - but mine is still kicking with light use.
