I know in the engine room you can fit in front of the motors on the 342 but not on the 320. To stay mpi you will have go up to 2002.

My budget is around 65k maybe 70
so I want the best bang for the buck
i love the 340 dancers but most rays don't have a walk thru windshield
    8.1 is a must
i intend on keeping my next boat for years
my 27ft ray I had for 7 and this one for two

The 340 and then the 342 are very similar. The early 342's had the transom tucked under the boat which took away from the engine room space. The later ones had the transom pushed back, giving you more room in there. @Alswagg would be able to give you the best description of them and the changes that happened over the different model years.

I've been in all of them many times.  To me, the 342 is probably the largest and has a full size shower.  There are different years that have more engine room as Greg mentioned.  Get a 2005 or newer to avoid that.  The 310 went thru 2002, then it was 312 for a couple years, then a 320.  I had the 2002 310, which was the first year with MPI and full smartcraft. 8.1s in a 342 would be really good.  I've rode on several 342s with the small blocks, and I believe it is one boat you'd really benefit with the larger engines. (just my opinion, don't want to start anything here)

I agree on the walk-thru windshield.  I have it on my 400 and love it. SR doesn't have any larger boats with it.

Be sure to see at least one hardtop -- preferably on a super-hot day so you can feel how much cooler the cockpit stays compared to canvas.

You forgot the 312.  It's actually in that neighborhood.  Don't let the model number fool you.
