Transom assembly location

More curious than anything...what determines where the cutout and transom assembly gets installed on the transom of a boat??

Looking at my 270 the entire assembly is submerged. Look at my dock neighbors SR and you can see the bell housing out of the water.  Seems to be different on all boats as I look around the harbor.

I'm sure weight comes into play on how high or how low it will sit.

Cavation plate on outdrive needs to be on the same plane as the bottom of the boat. Watch the outboard when you follow them.

if you ran a board down the bottom of the boat it would be on the same plane as the plate.
