Painting/Coating Cockpit Sole

WillhoundWillhound Member Posts: 4,208 ✭✭✭✭✭
I hate carpet in a boat, and not sure that Sea-Dek or Marine Mat is in the budget. And I don't think the Admiral would go for it anyway, but just to kick around an idea on a winter's day, how about using an elastomeric coating or paint to freshen up the cockpit and give it some contrast? Not sure this is the right product: https://www.homehardware.ca/en/rec/index.htm/Paint-Décor/Paint/Floor-Deck-Porch/Coverings/Coatings/3-66L-Warm-Base-Hardrock-Deck-and-Dock-Coating/_/N-1z141u8/No-24/R-I1817121?Num=0
and no, it obviously isn't for marine use, but just to give an idea of what I mean.
Anybody done it, or seen it done? Thoughts?
IF I did do it, I'd only do the areas that a regular carpet would cover, so if I didn't like it, I could cover it again.

I don't think you be happy with that, it seems to be a little to lumpy, have seen many pieces chip up on people's porches. I would look in to get coat and spray it on. Just my toughts.

How about vinyl plank flooring?  Cheap, easy to install, tolerates moisture, easy to keep clean.  The prep would be the same as for paint.  It's a "floating floor", not glue-down.  You would need some sort of trim around the edges, and that would be the only tricky part.

I am looking at vinyl plank for the cabin. Up top I want either something easily removable, like more carpet, or a coating that water can't get under.

Can the admiral sew? If so you can make new infinity vinyl weave carpet yourself. This is much much more durable than carpet and extremely stain resistant, new sea rays and runners come with this. I did my cockpit and swim platform last year for around $300 plus $100 for a sewing machine attachment.

Can She? Yes. Would She? Likely not. We are looking at that material as an option. Was quoted about $900 CDN with them coming to the boat and templating and installing.

$900 isnt too bad. One of my dock mates has a Sea Ray 40 and a local guy did his cockpit and platform in woven vinyl for $1600.

Thanks @randy56 I recall that thread now. A little nervous ordering from China but the price is attractive. Wonder where I could get my hands on a template drawing for a 2000 era FV270?

I've been looking for the template for a cockpit of a 2003 - 270.  My platform is done from the stuff from Melors in China as pictured in the attached thread.  It held up really well last year.  I wish I could find the actually CAD drawing for my cockpit, I would order from them again.  They won't cut anything from a paper/plastic template.  I already tried to get them to do it.  They want a CAD drawing of the cockpit.

@JonnyM your 2003 was the next generation cockpit design I believe, with the sink behind the helm. 1999 to 2002 were the same I believe and your 2003 stayed the same for about 4 or five years I think too, so a later model template would work. Some of the other 270 owners on here might be able to chime in.

@JonnyM & @Willhound They will sell you a hole sheet that you can cut your self. With the self adhesive back. They call it an eva sheet. So you could measure say 3 .5 ft by 7 ft they will cut you one that size, and ship to you. The only difficult cut will be the hole were the steps are.  I still have the drawing on the swim platform if someone need's it..

Randy has a great point on buying a sheet and cutting it yourself. I believe that you can round the edges with a router too, worth looking in to.

I tryed to route the edges, experimenting, did not work to well. But in the cabin there will be no need, if you leave the carpet on the side walls.

I'd want the EVA stuff for just the upper deck in the cockpit. When I get around to the cabin it'll be vinyl plank.

Interesting on the edging, I had thought I’d seen something online where  Sea dek shows you how to edge but I maybe mistaken

where i live the climate is warm all year round [some say similar to Fort Lauderdale ] and i got fed up with carpets . I just got rid of them full stop and then removed the carpet studs and filled the screw holes and never been happier. I dont find it slippery or difficult to handle. Now if i was in a cold climate it might be different.
