GPS Speedometer

Im installing a new GPS speedometer and the instructions say that one terminal should be a constant (+) hot. Does anyone know if I need to run a wire from the battery, bypassing the battery cut-off switch or can I pick up 12v in the wire going to the ignition switch and the switched power from the other side of the switch.
